Prior to the advent of the Festival of the Sound on the Canadian musical scene, who could have imagined that a festival in a small Northern Ontario vacation community would be the final stop on a world tour of musical premieres? In a unique project in collaboration with festivals in Japan and Holland, three leading composers (Dutch, Japanese and Canadian) have been commissioned to write works in tribute to Debussy. The three sonatas, planned by Debussy, but never written, are played by unusual instrumental groupings. Premieres are planned at all three festivals with an ensemble of Festival of the Sound musicians travelling to Japan and with Dutch and Japanese musicians participating in Parry Sound.
